Homeopathy: A Simple, Natural, Holistic and Non-Suppressive Systems of Medicine

In a recent international seminar – Homeopathy: a Hoax or the Medicine for the Twenty-first Century - organized by the Connecticut University, several interesting and new facts about homeopathy were brought out by a couple of Homeopathic scientists which brought out the efficacy and superiority of this holistic system of medicine. The data presented revealed that during the eighteenth and nineteenth century epidemics, Homeopathy had the most effective cures of the diseases without any side effects, had the least mortality rate, and the recovery period was more prompt than the other systems of medicine. It was an eye-opening session that was televised.

Charak, the father of the Ayurvedic system of medicine, who practiced medicine about four thousand years ago, was asked by his disciples to define "medicine", and the "the correct medicine". His reply is amazingly scientific and accurate and is valid even today. He said, "Anything that cures is medicine", and about the correct medicine, "the course of treatment which cures the original disease but produces some other kind of complication is not correct line of treatment; the correct one is that which cures but does not provoke any other." Today, we see all the vaccines, disease substances like snake poisons, botox, etc. being used for cure.

Homeopathy is based on the natural law "Similar cures similar". It is a holistic science dealing with the totality of the symptoms of a sick person in the general, mind, and physical spheres, giving importance to the peculiar and strange sensations and feeling; fears; modalities and the constitution of an individual patient, rather than the common symptoms of the disease, The nature warns us of the problems of our body through symptoms which comprise of pains, sensations, and modalities. As no two patients are alike each patient is treated as an individual based on the personal modalities and the constitution.

A homeopath well-versed with the homeopathic art of interrogation and healing recognizes the important symptoms of a patient noteworthy of repertoriztion to find the simillimum – the medicine covering almost all the important symptoms of a patient - and prescribes the correct dose according to the age, sex, vital force, acuteness or the chronicity of the disease, avoiding unnecessary repetition of the remedy. During the course of the treatment, the homeopath re-evaluates all the changes in the symptoms according to the three "laws of cure", and changes, if necessary, the medicine. According to Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of the homeopathic system of medicine, " A homeopath should remove from the regimen of the cure, anything that causes, aggravates, and excites the original condition of a sick person". Hence, dietetic and other restrictions during the homeopathic treatment depend on the type of the medicine given to an individual patient.

If a homeopathic remedy prescribed to a patient is similar to the symptoms, the vital force of the patient normally brings out the old suppressed symptoms, especially of the skin, which quickly vanish on their own. This is considered a sure sign of cure.

The medical science learned the hard way about the suppression of the eruptive fevers like measles, chicken pox, etc. by harsh fever-reducing medicines. These resulted in the complications like meningitis, pleuritis, etc. The Indian system of medicine prescribes the natural drugs to help the body throw out the maximum eruptions on the skin – the safest organ of the body - thus sparing the internal vital organs of the destructive disease force.

Homeopathy is a simple, holistic, and a non-suppressive system of medicine based on the natural laws. According to Mahatma Gandhi, "Homeopathy ...cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond doubt safer and more economical and most complete medical science."
