Perfect Enough: Achieving Happiness & Balance with The Discover Process
A Book Review by Tim Brunson DCH
There are numerous self-help models that claim that they will most definitely turn your life around. Perfect Enough: Achieving Happiness & Balance with The Discover Process by Laura King, a certified hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, and Life Coach, is another in the constellation of interesting transformational publications. As a fellow hypnotherapist and a NLP trainer, I immediately resonate with books based on my core skills.
Perfect Enough is actually two books in one. In the first part, Ms. King attempts to give a rather concise overview of hypnosis, NLP, and what she calls the Laws of the Universe and Natural Laws of the Mind. When considering the first two, I was impressed how clearly she expressed what I see as introductory material (although I found myself writing question marks by a few of her statements). The "Laws" section was inspiring. She stated that these ideas were transmitted by one of her mentors. However, I found that a couple of "Laws" were actually unattributed quotes from other thinkers such as Albert Einstein.
The second part of the book highlights the author's eight step process, which she calls "The Discover Process". She leads the reader through each of these steps providing excellent exercises together with tremendously well-written hypnotic scripts. Although her theory is chuck-full of wisdom and insight, I found the shear number of steps and the repetition of the format to be quite tedious for a sustained reading period. I did not review her companion workbook or CD's. However, if I had and applied this book as an incrementally digested self-therapeutic endeavor, I am sure that I would see this book as the very practical tool for change.
I see a place for this book. For someone who has enough dissatisfaction with their life and who needs a good model for coaching, this book is no less than brilliant. In fact, I see it as a great companion (or reference) for the coaching process. Even though I found that its theoretical background would have been more relevant in the 1970's or 1980's, there is enough timeless advice to make this a highly useful book.
