Settle for Excellence

Book Review by Tim Brunson DCH
There are very few case studies that actually depict someone who truly lives their life embodying the principles of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). However, the life of Topher Morrison, DCH, is one example of an author and presenter who is very congruent in how he lives and what he teaches.
In his new book, Settle for Excellence Morrison, a master communicator, takes the essence of NLP and hypnosis and, in a somewhat autobiographical format, shares how he has interweaved his training and the impact of various mentors into a very interesting and eventful life. He is upfront in his introduction that he did not plan to provide the readers with anything truly original. Nevertheless, his book provides a very enjoyable story that both informs and entertains the reader. He comes across as a writer that is sincere, believable, and a fellow human being with whom you can easily relate.
Essentially, other than a smattering of personal opinions, there is not much in this book that you can't find elsewhere. As a NLP and hypnotherapy instructor, he is not on the same theoretical and academic plain as Robert Dilts or Steve Andreas. However, as a story teller and teacher, I rarely meet presenters who even come close to matching Morrison's style and capabilities.
Even though Morrison is a very well-rounded NLP trainer and hypnotherapist, I had some problems with the chapter on self hypnosis. I totally agree with his assessment of the value and intent. On the other hand, the methodology that he proposes tends to be a little less elegant than what I expect from him based upon his background. His four step method appears to be not as clear and concise as it should be. He talks about hypnosis, the subconscious, the benefits, and need for regular practice without ever defining what hypnosis is. I'm afraid this would leave the reader with more misconceptions. Nevertheless, other that this small issue, I am totally in agreement with his views on the subject.
I must add that although I do not have a personal relationship with the author, our paths have crossed in a significant way on more than one occasion. In the mid-1990's Morrison became my second hypnotherapy instructor. I also took another course with him on Ericksonian Hypnotherapy several years later. And, he is directly responsible for my enrollment in the Doctor of Clinical Hypnotherapy program. On the other hand, his influence didn't stop there. In the first course that I took with him, he mentioned David Elman, the stage hypnotist turned instructor of medical and dental practitioners. (Elman was major rival and critic of the teachings of Milton H. Erickson, MD.)
If you are looking for a clinical book or something with original concepts, Settle for Excellence is not it. Regardless, I highly recommend this book as a great motivational and inspirational experience. Whether you are a clinician, patient/client, or someone needing an uplifting message, this book is worth much more than the price. Lastly, if you ever get a chance to meet or train with Topher Morrison, DCH, don't let the opportunity pass you by.
