The Effect of Meditation on Shooting Performance
The same principal investigator, E. Solberg, studied the effects of meditation on competitive shooting performance. Twenty-five elite shooters performed standardized test shooting, indoors and outdoors. Their performance was assessed before and after regular meditation training.
In addition, the shooters assessed their own experience of tension, recording their impressions on a visual analogue scale. The competition results in the outdoor season, just after the meditation training period, were significantly better than the results from the previous season (P<0.05). No significant difference between the groups was observed in the test shootings in the control groups. In addition, a significant association was found between low tension and strong performance in the test shootings (correlation r = 0.42, P < 0.0001; Wilcoxon rank sum test, z = -3.36, P < 0.001); 18% (= r2) . The study concludes that meditation may enhance competitive shooting performance, due to the reduction in tension it generates.
