Welcome to The International Hypnosis Research Institute Web site. Our intention is to provide quality information to clinicians and the general public concerning hypnosis, hypnotherapy, and other mind/body modalities. We intend to expand our coverage to include such topics as Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), energy psychology and medicine, and other related topics. While our intention is to provide quality information derived from valid sources, including peer reviewed literature concerning significant research, this site is not presented as a source of medical or psychological advice. Clinicians wishing to expand their scope of practice or protocols based upon presented information should perform due diligence prior to use. It is our sincere hope to stimulate interest in these topics and to contribute to the evolution of the science of hypnosis. -- Tim Brunson, PhD

Success Means Daring to be Committed

by Tim Brunson, PhD

Unless you are one of very few lucky people, most likely the only way that you will ever be successful is to commit to taking the massive action required to achieve a goal. Star athletes, successful business people, and even those who have found the love of their lives realize that without commitment, nothing will ever be achieved. So, if this is such as well-established fact, why isn't everyone a total success.

The answer to that question is that for too many people several of the areas of their brain, which should normally help them become masters of their universe, have enabled them to fear commitment. That area helps us anticipate future possibilities and in our mind simulate the occurrence of a potential adverse situation. This means that we think about what could go wrong and we play it out as if it actually were happening. We train our minds and bodies to become quite good at failure. Indeed, why pursue a certain course of action – especially should it require a considerable cost in resources or risk embarrassment – if it is currently causing us so much pain – at least in our mind. Therefore, unquestionably committing to a particular person or a specific plan of action will be difficult as our mind keeps on playing a recording of failure. We are training our mind to expect failure. So, let's do the logical thing, which is refuse to commit.

The resolution to this problem can be found in the same brain part that is causing it. And, since repeated replays of our fear have trained it to perform at a genius level, it will be a very important ally once you have harnessed its power. Once you understand the role of anticipation and simulation – which hypnotherapists also call suggestion and imagination – and make the choice to pursue a course of action, you will find that you increase the probability of your success. The secret here is that functional parts of the brain cannot pursue opposing types of thoughts at the same time. Imagine what it would feel like to totally commit to a person with whom you have fallen deeply in love. While holding that thought in your mind, it is absolutely impossible to simultaneous worry about all the fears that may be associated with the future of that relationship.
